As with nearly all of our updates, this newsletter starts in disbelief that the time has flown so quickly since our last letter to you all – I can’t believe that I find myself writing this to you on 1st August already – very nearly a whole year since our last festival performance at Woodworks! Festival in 2010. That’s not to say the members of FWB have been resting on their laurels, oh no!
Firstly, we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all of the people who have emailed us, or joined us on Twitter or Facebook over the last year; your kind words and encouragement have been a constant source of inspiration, and we are delighted to take this opportunity to let you know what we have been up to, and what we’re planning next…
Robby has been carried away overseas, to California no less, where (after a couple of weeks hanging around LA with Steel Panther, watching Motley Crue and riding around in Mustangs, of course) he has been performing magic tricks and teaching guitar to the families at Camp America in the snow capped Montecito mountains… as well as doing some very faerie-like things, such as visiting the oldest trees in the world. Thank you to everyone who has been asking about him – he’s having a great time out there (though all the Faeries are missing him muchly, and can’t wait to have him back).
And for the rest of us? Perhaps not quite as exciting as Robby’s California adventures, still pretty busy all the same!
FWB’s newest member Chris Thatcher has been going from strength to strength with his band Pearl Handled Revolver, who have had a full-on summer playing all over Europe with the likes of the Black Crowes and The Lightening Seeds. (if you haven’t come across them yet, visit them HERE).
Meanwhile, Ciara, Andrew, Emma and myself have continued to play together and with our
families at various gigs and sessions around our hometowns.
Andrew, Emma and I have also been pouring a lot of time and effort into another of our
pastimes - Morris dancing with Hemlock Morris. Building the Side up and heightening
awareness of the Morris tradition is hard work but great fun and very rewarding, and shares
much of the ethos of Faerie Wear Boots – that traditional music, song and dance is a living
tradition, that needs to be respected, whilst still moving forward and being relevant to us
today. Please take a few moments to check out the Hemlock Morris website if you haven’t
seen us yet!
But back to the present. Lughnasagh marks the first of the three Autumn harvest festivals
and the start of the harvest of the fruits that were sown in the Spring. This has to be a near
perfect time for FWB to begin assembling ourselves for the performances that lie ahead.
We’re looking forward to performing for the first time some of the new music we have been
working on and introducing some of the new instrumentation that we have been practicing all
through the Spring and Summer.
So with a number of gigs ahead of us, we were delighted to be asked by our good friends at
The Entertainer Magazine to be involved in their latest issue. It was a pleasure for me to do the
interview with Ben Raza, who I first met at The Rhythm Festival a few years ago. Ben and his
team do a fantastic job of encouraging and promoting the local music scene, and have been
especially supportive of Robby’s projects, Faeries Wear Boots and Hemlock Morris. Please
visit this link for a digital copy of the magazine http://www.bedfordtoday.co.uk/lifestyle/digital-
editions/the-entertainer or if you’re local to the Bedfordshire area, look out for a hard copy –
it’s distributed widely in the local pubs, clubs and shopping centres.
So, with a new lease of life, look out for more frequent updates on the FWB website. We’re really looking
forward to Woodworks! Festival, on Saturday 4th September, it will be great to be out performing again, and to be
at such a friendly festival as this one.
Next gig on the radar… Riseley Folk, 26th November 2011. More details on this one as they unfold Faerie fans, but for now, why not visit the Facebook page: Riseley Folk.
Until next time fair-folk, please keep in touch! The MySpace page is soo last year – like us on Facebook! And now presenting… Faeries Wear Boots on Twitter! Add @FWBband to keep up to date with exactly what the Faeries are up to.
Very best faerie wishes,
